THE MANUKAU PILOTAGE.
To the Editor of the Southern Cross. Sir,— Csn you inform me at whose recommendation Captain Lewis, the late Pilot for Manukau harbour, was dismissed at a months' notice ; the reason for his dismissal; -why Captain Wing, who it appears must know the banks well, from his landing the Zingari on the highest necesible part of one of them, was appointed; and whether he has not an increased salary as harbour master, a new house building for him, at the public expense, and a new boat. By so doing you will oblige, Yours truly, A.N EiN'E.MT TO ALL JOBS. Auckland., 12th May, 1857. [There were several competitors for the office of pilot at Manukau, under the late Government. At the request of the Government, a naval board, of which Capt. l>rury was one, was appointed, for the purpose of testing their several capabilities. The Board recommended Mr. Lewi6, who was accordingly appointed to the situ-, ation. Without any reference to the capabilities of Captain Wing, we merely observe that Mr. Lewis adds one more to the list of able public servants who are not employed under the present Government.— Ed.]
