Mechanics' Institute. — On Monday last a lecture -was delivered by Mr. RichanL Hill, upon the subject of " Thomas Moore." The audience was one of the best of the season. Although Mr. Hill's genius lies more in the •comic than the tenti mental, and although under the latter must be classed, for the most part, the writings of Ireland's rifted poet, yet the subject, so far as it could be in a single lecture, was done ample justice to. But the lecture was by rib 'mctlrt^tlry disquisition upon the life and -writings of Moore; it -was interspersed wtth many a spirited ,rectta- - *tion and racy anecdote, the latter told in a style peculiarly Mr. Hi]l's own, and drawing down roars qf applause. On next Tuesday evening a paper upon Magnetism will be xead bv Mr. Mathieson .

Local Steam Navigation Co. — It will be seen from -our advertising columns that the adjourned meeting of the shareholders of this Company is fixed for to-morrow. We have no doubt that, on the subject of a Southern trip being , taken into consideration, the news brought by the Zin^ari, as well as the fact of that steamer being about to be with- .■ drawn from the trade will receive due weight ; and we trust that those who are pecuniarily interested will see their way clear again to get up the steam. In connection ■with this company, we may mention that two defaulting shareholders were sued on Monday last, in the llesiient Magistrate's Court, for the amount of their s'lares : *ti<l that judgment will be given at the next civil sitting of toe Court The result will have some iu.iueuerf ou the fortunes oi the comnanv.

Fatal Accidint.— Intelligence reached town yesterday, from Coromandel, of the death of an old colonist' Dennis Campbell, boat builder, under the following circumstances. He and two others were digging for gold in Waiu Creek, Coromandel ; the deceased at the time being engaged in undermining a high bank. His mates cautioned him not to go too far, but the prospects were good and he persevered. In a few minutes afterwards the bank fell in, burying the unfortunate man. He was quickly dug out, still alive, but one of his legs and several of his ribs broken. He only survived three hours.
