Mechanics' Institute. — The lnst lecture of the series was by W. B. Baker, Esq., upoa Maori popular poeiry, an interesting subject, and treated by one whose position enables him to do so with originality as well as> with talent. The next will be delivered this evening upon the subject of Phrenology— the lecturer, Mr. Charles Southwell.

Conviction under thb Passengers' Act, 1856. — Yesterday, at the Court of the Kesident Magistrate, Francis Cherry, one of the steerage passengers by the • William Denny, ' sought to recorer, under a provision of the Passengeis' Act 1856, the amount of his passage money (£8) and maintenance for 46 days at the rate of Is. 6d. per day— in all £11 9s. The facts were sworn to by the plaintiff and were not disputed. The Bench considered that the law permitted of no alternative, under the circumstances, but to award the amount claimed. Judgment accordingly for the plaintiff.

Young Men's Christian Association.— The next lecture of the series will be delivered on Friday next— upon Savonarola and Reform in Italy in the fifteenth century, by the Rev. T. Hamer.

Auckland Local Steam Navigation Company. — The meeting of shareholders, convened for yesterday at 3 o'clock, was adjourned till next Friday inconsequence of paucity of attendance.

To Publicans. — We remind those interested that the attendance of publicans to whom licenses were granted by the Licensing Bench on the 21st inst., together with that of their sureties, will be required at the Resident Magistrates' Court, this day at 12 o'clock.

General Assembly.— By a proclamation that appeaisin a "New Zealand Government Gazette," published on Saturday, the General Assembly, which stood prorogued till the Ist of July next, has been further prorogued sine die.

Instructions to Superintendents. — By a proclamation issued in the same Gazette, his Excellency the Governor, in pursuance of powers vested in him by the Constitution Act, directs the various Superintendents of Provinces to reserve for the Governor's pleasure every Provincial bill passed for the purpose of raising money by way of loan.
