To the Editor of the Southei n Cross. Sir, — Would you allow me as a candidate for the situation as pilot of the Maiiukau, to elucidate a statement in this day's 'New Zealander,' calcalated to throw prejudice against me as a candidate for that situation. It is stated that "notwithstanding the absence of a pilot, Captain Lewis found his way up the channel without difficulty." Now, Sir, the brig came inside of the bar during the night, when it was impossible for a look-out to have seen any vessel, emd in passing the pilat station, (the proper place for boaiding vessels), the captain sent his boat on shore for a pilot, and I, as acting pilot, conducted the vessel from Poponga to Onehunga, against a boisterous head wind, in the absence of the captain, he and a gentleman passenger having made their way up to town in the ship's dingy. I am &c. Joseph Anderson, Auckland, Acting Pilot. Sept. 26, 1855.
