CONTINENTAL WAR PREPARATIONS.
I It is stated that it is the intention of the allies to . address all the smaller states of Europe, in a collective , note, in which they will be called upon to declare their willingness or not, to add an army contingent should the events of Europe demand such a step. The number of troops which each state may be enabled to contribute is also to be stated. ! Hanover displays the greatest activity at the present 1 moment in completing its army to a war establishment. Every material is being renewed, and the whole will 1 soon be perfectly ready for mobilisation. All the state : ! arsenals are actively engaged in the manufacturing of I various warlike necessaries. The solcheis ha\e had '. their furloughs recalled, and have been onleied to rel"oin their regiments immediately. The government has directed the pmchasa qf 3,000 horses for the artillery and other car iages of -war. The Hanoverian cavulr/, leputed one of the best in Europe, is likewise on ' thy tall war establishment. The king is also said to hi%c e in powered Baron da Stockhausen to conclude a separate treaty with Austria. Brunswick and Nassau i ha\e aKo sent declarations on that point of a very sa- ; tisfactory character for the Austrian cabinet. i The Swedish government is n aking great changes ' in its army ; it is preparing for war by placing on the i retired list the old soldiers, and making numerous proj motions among the most capable of the generals. The hereditary prince displays extraordinary activity in order to put the army on the most efficient warfooting. The accession of the kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the alliance contracted on the 10th of April between France and England to defend Turkey against Russia (says the Augsburg Gazette) may be considered as certain. In the course of the negotiations King Ferdinand repeatedly sought the advice of the court of Vienna, which openly declared that Austria desired the alliance of Naples with the western powers, as the union of all the states was the only means of procuring peace. It is said that Naples will immediately send some ships of war to the Crimea, and the same amount of soldiers as Piedmont. The Silesian Gazette repeats the statement. Portugal (says the Gazette of Verona, which also thinks the Neapolitan alliance probable), is about to join the alliance : it could furnish 12,000 men. The Kreuz Zeitung states, on the contrary, that Portugal has positively declined active participation in the alliance. The official Gazette di Verona has just announced that " the Sardinian flag is not likely to flutter alone m the camp of the allies. Another Italian state may give its colours to the wind." The flag of Tuscany is supposed to be pointed to. , There has been some talk of the adhesion of Spain to the western alliance, and of her furnishing a contin- 1 gent for the Crimea. The Novedales says that a de- j putation of officers not on active service had waited on Espartero, and had implored him, in the name of humanity, as they were dying of hunger, and m the name of the liberal principles to which they were devoted, to form a Spanish corps for service there. The answer of the Duke de la Victoria is not stated. The King of Wurtemberg has sanctioned the decision of the diet, ordering that the Wurtemberg contingent should be put upon a war footing. The ministry will therefore demand from the chambers a credit of three million florins.
