THE EMBARKATION AT PORTSMOUTH.

As early as nine o'clock on Tuesday morning many were astir in anticipation of the arrival of the Scots Fusilier Guards, but it was soon whispered that our beloved Queen had determined to inspect the Guards before their departure, and that, consequently, they would not arrive at this port until one o'clock. Before that hour the whole of Queen-street was lined with anxious spectators, who cheered the battalion as they marched through the town, headed by the bands of the 23rd, 35th and 79th Highlanders. At one o'clock they arrived at the dock gates, when the rush was immense to gain a sight of the battalion who were about to sustain the proud name of Great Britain in alliance with that of gallant France in defence of the oppressed ; the crowd, in their enthusiasm, broke forth in loud request that the gallant Guards would revenge "Sinope/' j A finer body of men, nearly a thousand strong, it is impossible to conceive. Their average height 5 feet 10 to 11, and their weight 12 to 13 stone. A charge with the bayonet with such a line would beat down a nine inch brick wall. In one hour and twenty minutes the whole were on boaid and very soon after appeared in their forage caps and ! jackets. They appeared to be in the best of spirits. On Wednesday her Majesty's screw troop-fri-gate,! Simoom, 18, Captain Henry Smith, went out of harbour with the Scots Fusilier Guards. She brought up at Spithead, took in her powder 1 and shells, and at half-past three got under weigh, j with a pleasant breeze from N.N.E.
