DIED.

On Wednesday last, 4th January, Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. John Root, High-street, aged 21 years. Very suddenly, in Honolulu, Sept. 24th, Mr. Thomas Cleghoux, a native. of Scotland, aged 54 years. The deceased left his native land about ten years since, and emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand, where he occupied offices of trust and responsibility under the British Government. He visited these islands originally hoping to engage in his favourite professional employment, as a scientific gardener. Sufficient encouragement not being offered, he engaged in mercantile pursuits. He was much esteemed as an intelligent, upright, and Christian man. The last hour of his life was spent at the study of the chaplain, attending a meeting of the Bethel church. He did not complain of illness, appearing as calm and cheerful as usual, but on his way home was obliged, through pain and weakness, to call at a neighbour's, where he expired in. about ten minutes. His known Christian character affords pleasing evidence to believe his last words were those of one who felt their meaning, " I hope I am prepared for what I am about to meet." How pertinent our Saviour's exhortation, " Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the son of man cometh." — Matt., 25 — 13, — Honolulu Friend.
