The New Government House.

A correspondent Las thus drawn our attention to the architectural designs submitted for competition, on' Wednesday, for the erection of a new Government House in Auckland : — Sir,— Ai I understand that the prizei for deiigm for tbe new Gorernment Home, bate now been awarded, I would inggeit tbtt all the plans tent in for competition, be exhibited, in order that the public (who haTt to pay for the work) may form an opinion of the relatire meriti of the different detigm. We have been informed, upon authority, in which we repose every confidence, that the design of Mr. Header Wood, is that, which has been selected. Of that design we have no means of forming any opinion whatever. It may be admirable ; or it may be the very reverse. This, however, is, unfortunately, too well known to the public of Auckland, that the public works hitherto executed by Mr. Reader Wood have been beneath contempt as works of art, and despicable failures as works either of stability or utility. Under such circumstances, and, in the construction of a work of such essential and ornamental importance as a new Government House, we are of opinion that the people who pay have the most unquestionable right to be fully satisfied that the design selected shall be the best calculated to accomplish the object in view. We are, therefore, of opinion that our correspondent's suggestion of exhibiting to the public the different designs tendered, is one that should be adopted ; not less in justice to the competing architects, than in satisfaction of the public anxiety, which has so- long been manifested in favour of the immediate erection of a becoming Government House. We are warranted in affirming that the public will not be satisfied in the choice reported to have been made, without themselves being permitted to view the several designs.
