FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE.

France. Paris, April 7. — But little good, it is now acknowledged, has been obtained by the gagging of the press. Never, perhaps, at any epoch in our history, has rumour been so busy, or so malignant, or so inventive. It would seem as if, conscious of having the whole of the work to do, she sought to employ her thousand tongues all at once, each one upon a different matter. The foulest stories are circulated concerning the members of the Government : and, whether true or false, the effect of them is visible already. They say that little sleep is now obtained by those who seek it in the splendid state beds of the Tuilleries; the funeral of Madame Raspail is the skeleton, the death's head, which had caused the new alarm to spread its sickening influence over the members of the Imperial family. It is certain that the system of police and spies upon which alone all security is founded, having been thus proved worthless, give sufficient cause for all this terror. The Republicans laugh in defiance, and declare the whole thing to have been nothing more than an experiment to ascertain whether the rallying system newly devised by one of -their number would be found to act readily when occasion required. The result has proved its efficacy, and every polite authority, from the prefect himself to the lowest gensdarme, find itself lost and baffled by the discovery of a power greater than its own. To add to the embarrassment of the hour, it has been ascertained that more than 20,000 copies of Felix Pyat's " Nouv.ejle Organisation" have been introduced into Paris, no one can "tell by what means. Several copies of the work have .been found in the various barracks of the city; and although the severest investigations have been gone into, they have proved hitherto entirely without result. No longer ago than Monday last, it is well known that a grand .Republican banquet was held not far from the station of the Northern Railway. t ßy whom, it was given, yet remains a secret j but the heroes of the ffte were of 'cour^tb£/grapjtes*.from the various prisons, besides some few: o( tbo^e returned frpni

tra iibpo nation. Every class of bociety seemed to have sent its representative to this banquet j and tue emissaries of the police who watched round the door with dripping mantles and steaming garments, — for the raia was pouring in torrents all the while,— have declared that some of those whose position would have warranted their enmity to all such Republican demonstrations, were seen to enter. Some rumour of the proceedings which took place upon the occasion have got abioad, to flatter the love of mystery which forms one great characteristic of the people. When the banquet was terminated, the President addressed the guests, bidding them be of good cheer, for the end of all oppression and injustice was fast approaching. He then said that the friend in whose name they had been convened, who had provided the means of their meeting thus in cheerfulness and peace, was waiting without to pledge them to the great cause to wl i h they were bound closer than ever by the sufferings they had undergone. At that moment, a door at the end of the banquethall opened slowly, and a lady entered, and walked silently to the head of the table. The guests all arose — not a word was spoken, but the President filled a goblet and presented it to the lady, who looked around, and in a firm melodious voice, exclaiming, "Vive la-Republique democratique et soeiale!" drank the toast, and the cup was handed round that each might partake the pledge. When the ceremony was accomplished, the lady retired .silently as she had entered ; for the gendarmes without were waiting most anxiously for an excuse to break in and dispel the meeting, so that any demonstration was impossible. Not ono amongst the assembly attempted to breathe the lady's name ; but yet somehow it has got abroad and caused the greatest interest and astonishment. The legistimists are still hovering around the Red Republic, seeking the weak place in its ranks j but admission is no longer possible. The Socialists declare that they cannot bring their m in :ls down to the level of those pessessed by the aristocrats, and decline to act in concert with them. Even they, 'canaille* as they have been called, have expressed disapproval of the low and immodest revenge of the Faubourg St. Germain, whose dainty curled darlings, after having flattered the Tuilleries by applying for tickets to tli3 balls and fetes given there, have made a point of distributing them without any care to all the riff-raff and 'lorettes' of Paris. Investigation into the origin of so large a congregation of a certain description of ladies having been present at the Senate ball, has elicited the certainty of the fact. They say that this cut has so severely wounded the Emperor, that he has not yet recovered it, inasmuch as, contrary to his usual taciturnity, he had boasted rather loudly of the adhesion of the aristo* cratic faubourg, as proved by the avidity with which applications from that quarter for tickets had been made. — Correspondent of the Atlas.
