FOREIGN NEWS. (From the 'Sunday Times,' April 27.)
Letters from Bosnia announce that a great battle was fought on the 19th of March, . between fifteen thousand insurgents and the Sultan's troops. The former are stated to have been totally routed, with a loss of one hundred and fifty men, dead or wounded, and one hundred prisoners. Letters from Agram mention another victory obtained on the Bth April, by Omer Pacha over three thousand insurgents, near Kozarac. The Vienna papers are very indignant at the protests of England and France against the annexation of the Austrian provinces and monarchy into the German confederation. A Vienna correspondent of the ministerial Prussian gazette asserts that the papal government is expected soon to apply for the assistance of an Austrian brigade. In any case, the Austrian troops in Lombardy will be very much increased. Count Alvensleben has returned from Dresden, but he does not retire from the conference. He has only come to take part in the conference on the instructions to be given to the Russian plenipotentiary at the German diet. The "Genoa Gazette" states that the Emperor of Austria has ordered two frigates to be built in the arsenal of Venice, which is to be re-established as well as the free port. «-In order to concede something to the demands for stricter observance of the Sabbath, the Chambers of Hesse-Darmstadt have agreed to forbid the continuance of dancing i after twelve o'clock on Saturday nights. ■ The " Cologne Gazette," under date Vienna, 10 th, says — " Prince Mefcternich is on the point of returning. His villa of liuenwig is being prepared for his reception. He will arrive in August, after having passed some time at Johannisberg " Advices from Mexico state that the Tehuantepec railroad is feist progressing towards completion. It was expected to be open for traffic in four months. It is said that General Espartero is about to quit his retirement, and to take a part again in public affairs ; he is expected to be. v
'liomiuated president of the Progressist directing committee for managing the coming elections. The Emperor of Austria is said to intend travelling after Whitsuntide through Hungary, Galitia, and* Croatia. Qneen Marie Amelie, the widow of Lows Phillippe, is about to take up her residence at Rosenau, near Coburg. The Duke de Nemours will occupy the villa of the Duke -Ernest of Wurtemberg. The ministerial papers of Berlin state that Austria has proposed, in case of certain events, to march 200,000 troops through Piedmont. This proposal, which has been submitted to the cabinet of Turin, has made a deep impression in Berlin.
