THE RACES.
In our last we gave the result of the first day's proceedings at the Course at Epsom. Friday unfortunately opened with the same gloomy aspect as that with which the previous day was ushered in. On "both days, however, a large concourse of people assembled j but Saturday being more propitious, numerous parties who had not ventured out on either of the previous days, availed themselves of it to enjoy the pleasures of the course, and by noon a large and highly regpectable company had arrived. In order to preserve the record of the three day's events in a more convenient form, we have repeated the particulars of Thursday's matches, and now subjoin those of Friday and Saturday. First Day. An allowance in the above weights of 3 lbs. to mares and geldings, and a further allowance of 5 lbs. to maidens. The sport on both Friday and Saturday was well sustained throughout, and the greatest credit is due to the Stewards for the arrangements by which order and regularity were maintained. Towards the close of the proceedings on Saturday, an accident occurred at the Grand Stand by a portion of the front railing giving way, when several parties were precipitated unexpectedly to the ground, and a gentleman and a child received some rather severe bruizes, but we are glad to learn that both are now in a fair way of recovery — none of the injuries having been so great as was at first reported. It may be added, no less as a source of considerable congratulation to all parties interested in the "Turf," than as a record to the credit of the numbers present, that on none of the race days have we heard of any instance of the police officers having been called upon to interfere, beyond keeping the course clear.
XI. M. S. "Ely," 18 guns, Capt. Oliver, sailed yesterday for Wellington, whence she will return in the course of five or six weeks. Mr. Sheriff Berrey is a passenger by her to the South. The " Ilavannah" was to sail from Sydney for Port Nicholson early in December, and would meet the "Fly" in that harbour.
