ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Southern Cross. Sik, — Sir George Grey's love of misrepresenting the truth has become a proverb in New .Zealand. At this time when we are suffering from the misrule of the last two years, and all the arts of civil life are at a stand still ; now, when Sir George Grey's selfibh policy is weighing so heavily on industry; and it seems next to impossible he can longer escape the censure of the Home Government ; the blind Goddess (his patron. Saint no doubt) discovers her long hidden treasures, and gives him the opportunity, by a little chicanery, of throwing off the burden of his misdeeds from his own 6hou.derc f on to the broad shores of San Francisco ; and, to me it appears little short of certainty that he will represent the golden fever of California as the duease that is fast thinning our population, and causing: all the evils we are now suffering from ; although Sir (ieorge well knows, it is rather a desire to escape from a Colony he has so shamefully mis-governed, than a greedy debire after riches, which has made bo many persons leave New .Zealand. \\ hether Sir George Grey will take advantage of the opportunity thr< wn in his way, time, and the Blue Book will show ; and though I have no wish to condemn a man before he is found guilty, Sir George has hitherto shown so little mercy and truth when alluding in his despatch* s to the settlers in Auckland, that I think I shall be held excused for auspecing him of endeavouring to hide his misdeeds at the expense of his fellow townsmen. I have, &c , A. Auckland, June 26, 1349.
