Taxation Hardship
Sir,—l notice that at. various times you have drawn attention to unjust taxation. anil as the Minister of Finance has promised some slight, future adjustment, I beg to mention men like me. I am a recent widower and my eldest daughter keeps house for me. I am over 70 years of age and working. My late good wife and I reared eight children and they are all taxpayers. My particular hardship, and no doubt many are affected similarly, is that I am taxed as though I had not reared any children, and no reduction is allowed on behalf of m.v daughter-housekeeper, who is single. In 1938 the Adjustment Commission cancelled a second mortgage of £2OOO. representing my life savings in farm property, and all I have to look to when unable to work is social security, and I have paid more into this than I shall over draw out. My late wife and I received no assistance from any Government in rearing our family, and I have always boon a wage earner, and now I am taxed to help other people rear children, who in many cases are a great deal better off than I am. with the additional advantage of youth.-—I am, etc., SEEKER FOR JUSTICE. Wellington. October 20. x
