PROTEST FROM SOUTH

Local Body Members’ Views (By Telegraph Press Association.) DUNEDIN. October 25. The following remit protesting against the proposed legislation regarding the country quota was carried at the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association: “That this conference of South Island local body members views with grave concern the introduction of the Electoral Amendment Bill which. it would appear, may mean the loss to the South Island of probably two seats m the House of Representatives. This will strengthen the. already strong North Island vote, and, furthermore, will have the effect of a considerable loss of prestige, iu addition to. the loss of representation fet the South Island.” The remit was moved by Air. .1. C. Kirkness. Oamaru, who stated that tne conference had no desire to participate in party politics, but as the association was. formed for the' purnose of protecting the interests of the South Island, it felt justified iu entering an emphatic protest against any legislation which had as its ultimate aim. the denrival of the South Island of representation. Any decision to reshuffle the Parliamentary seats should be postponed till all service personnel returned, and citizens who had been directed, or attracted to the North Island as a result of the abnormal wartime conditions, had been allowed to return to their homes.
