“PASSAGE TO MARSEILLE”

"Passage to Marseilles” (at the De Luxe Theatre) is a possible and quite enthralling thriller. It is a story told by Captain Freycinet of an incident early in tlie' war, and the acting of that story makes the picture. In it Freycinet is a passenger on a liber which picks up a canoe- carrying live semi-conscious men. Against the wishes of a certain .Major Duval (Fascist) tlie skipper orders the men to be brought on board. These men confide to Freycinet

that they are escapees from Devil’s Island, the French prison settlement In the Guianas from which they had escaped through the efforts of one "Grandpere” (Vladimir SokolofT). While tlie voyage assumes normality comes tlie news of France’s surrender to the Germans, when tlie captain changes his course for England. Major Duval objects, and being overridden, foments a munity. It remains for the escapees to settle the mutineers and save the ship for England. Humphrey Bogart gives one of ids strong-man character studies as Matrac. leader of tlie escapees. Claude Rains is Freycinet, Michele Morgan is Paula, and Sydney Greenstreet is excellent in the role of Major Duval.
