COUNTY COUNCIL REFUSES TO PAY DEBT

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, August 29. The Mangonui County Council last year refused to strike a hospital rate. The Treasury thereupon diverted subsidies which would normally have been paid to the County Council for roads and maintenance purposes. The Works Departmeitt took over maintenance of main highways in the county and the council undertook to pav charges allocated by the department for work done. Yesterday, the council. by a maiority vote, refused to pay an account of £382/10/- received from the department representing 25 per cent, of the cost involved.
