Rehabilitation Help
‘'The organization for handling the rehabilitation of our returned servicemen is now well established and has had considerable experience in dealing with the large number of men and women who have already been discharged from the. Forces,” said the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash in his Budget speech. The Rehabilitation Department was essentially an organization for assisting individuals in training or with finance to fit them back into civilian life, and there still remained the larger problem of economic reconstruction and expansion so necessary to enable returned men and women, % the workers in war industries, and generally all workers to be usefully employed in ways that would restore and improve the standard of living. The total authorizations of rehabilitation assistance last year amounted to £6,213,000, of which £1,348,000 had not been uplifted on Alarch 31. Taking all sources into account, the actual expenditure on rehabilitation last year was: War Expenses Account, £1,243,000; Slate Advances Corporation. £2.499,000; Lands and Survey Department, £1,063,000; Native Department, £60,000. Total, £4,863.000.
