CHRISTCHURCH POWER DISPUTE

The New Zealand Counties’ Association in annual conference yesterday decided to do all in its power to assist the M'aimairi County Council to prevent the passing into law of an. Empowering Bill under which the Christchurch City Council would take over the supply of electric power to the county and the assets of the M’aimairi Electric Power Board. The association chairman, Mr. \V. Morrison (Maxwell) said the proposal was a dangerous one and the association would assist "Waimairi county all it could. Mr. H. Kitson (M’aimairi) said the Bill was framed by the city counciland the present power board—a “suicide” body—without notice to or consultation with the county council. Its enactment would make possible the “steal” of £llO,OOO of the funds of one local body by another. The power board had £20,000 in cash and assets valued at £90,000. It would create a precedent whereby any local body adjacent to a rapacious municipality could have its assets taken. Under the Bill, if made law. the Waimairi suppliers would have no control whatever over the Christchurch City Council. They would be disfranchized.
