PLEA FOR UNITY
84,000 Farmers Have 27 Organizations NEED FOR SPEARHEAD
“The farmers of New Zealand, numbering 84,000, have no fewer than 27 organizations, and each of the 27 speaks with a different voice,” said Mr. J. G. Brechin (Pahiatua) in an appeal for unity made at the National Dairy Conference in Wellington yesterday. As a result, he said, the farmers had no spearhead. They were opposed by the Alliance of Labour, which was the spearhead of every trade union in New 6 As "an illustration of “the ineffectiveness of dairy-farmers” he asked: In vour opinion, if this conference had been brought about by the Alliance of Labour, would two Ministers have refused to meet a committee from that conterence as they have refused to meet a committee from this conference? A delegate: No! “It doesn’t matter what we say nowadays. so long as we say the same thing at the same time,” Mr. Brechin continued. “That is the secret of the success of our natural opponents —1 am sorry to say that —those who are not farmers.” ~ Mr. Brechin was speaking m support of a remit submitted by the executive in which it was recommended that, a; soon as the Dominion executive of the dairy section of the Federated Farmers had been elected, a conference should be held between it and the Dairy Industry Council with a view to securing co-oper-ative arrangements on a basis satisfac tory to both branches of the industry; and that, pending such conference, a representative of each of the following organizations be added to the Dairy industry Council: The Dairy Producers Association, the Town Milk Producers Federation, the National Pig Council and the Bobby Calf Executive. The remit was adopted.
