SUPPLIES OF COPPER

Use For Building Purposes

“The use of copper, and copper alloys in all allied countries has been subjected to strict control since early in the war,” said the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr. Sullivan, yesterday- “Corresponding controls were applied in New Zealand and generally, during the war period, the limited quota of copper which has been made available for building and constructional purposes has been reserved for the manufacture of hot water cylinders, washing coppers and for hot water piping in districts where the life of galvanized'pipe used for this purpose is less than 15 years. “Great Britain has now agreed to increase the Dominion’s' quota of copper for building purposes and it is anticipated. therefore, that in six to nine months’ time, when the increased quantities of materials should be landing in New Zealand, the various building construction control notices affecting the use. sale and distribution of copper sheets and tubes will be revoked.” The Minister said that in_ the meantime the controls in operation in . the Dominion would have to be maintained except that the Building Controller would now approve of the use of existing stocks, of 24 am! 20-gauge copper sheets for the manufacture of supply tanks 50 gallons and under in capacity, flushing ■ cisterns and drainage vent stacks.
