RONGOTAI AIRPORT
Junior Chamber’s Scheme Commended
Congratulating the Wellington Junior Chamber of Commerce on its. independent and painstaking examination of the Rongotai airport proposals, Mr. B. Todd, chairman of the airport committee of the Wellington City Council, stated that the junior chamber was quite right in saying that any opposition to Rongotai airport development arises principally from lack of knowledge of the merits which the new airport will have. In its recommendation of certain improvements to the head of Evans Bay the chamber has made a valuable contribution to the future amenities of Wellington,” he said. “It is to be hoped that all the authorities concerned will find a way to implement this proposal, which will greatly improve access and reduce time of travel to Miramar and adjacent suburbs. . “American air lines have practically standardized for internal, lines on a 21passenger machine. British air authorities also confirm that for domestic air lines the 21-passenger machine offers the optithum relationship of economical operation and of frequent and convenient service to the travelling public. Rongotai airport as finally developed will meet all the requirements for aeroplanes of this type. In the United States one finds that notwithstanding defects in location in some cases, airports are seldom beyond 20 minutes’ travel from the centre of the city. , . , “There will be very large machines developed for trans-continental and transoceanic flights, but there is every authority for saving that the type which will be used for 'internal transport within New Zealand can be accommodated with a full margin for safety at the future Bongotai airport.”
