MILITARY SERVICE

Gazette Call-up Of 5009 Men

A Gazette issued .yesterday calls up 5009 men for military service. The Minister of National Service, Mr. McLagan. said that the majority of tlie names gazetted were youths who had attained the age of IS years since, the previous callup in November, 1944. Under 'present policy, these youths, with the exception of those who volunteered for service in the R.N.Z.A.F., were not meantime liable for mobilization.

“In these circumstances,” said the Minister, “there is no need for any appeals to be submitted at this stage. Adequate facilities will be provided for appeals to be lodged later, .wherever necessary, if and when liability for mobilization actually eventuates. There are, however, included in the Gazette the names of a number of men who, by reason of age, may be lialile for immediate service, and where postponement is sought in respect of any of these men, the right of appeal should be exercised at once. The calling up of these men is in pursuance of the normal procedure for the creation of reserves of manpower for military purposes, and must of necessity be continued till final victory over Japan is achieved.”

Tlie numbers called up from the various military areas are: —Auckland 1116, Paeroa 306, AVhangarei 192, Hamilton 237, Wellington 721, Wanganui 347, Napier 453, New Plymouth 262, Nelson 321, Christchurch 1010, Dunedin 497, Invercargill 357.
