JAPANESE CLAIM
“Fierce Counter-Attacks (Received October 20, 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 20. Tokio radio says a Domei news agency dispatch from Manila today reported that Japanese forces on Leyte Island are launching fierce counter-attacks against the invaders, who landed at two points on the island yesterday. “Enemy infantry, under cover of a smokescreen, commenced their landing operations at noon at Tacloban, in the north-eastern part of the island,” said the report. "Other infantry forces started landing at 7 p.m. in the C’abalian area iu the southern tip of the island. A United States battleship ran aground at Bunga Point, on Samar Island, off the north-eastern coast of Leyte. The stern is submerged and the forward section is high aground.” Earlier, a Domei broadcast said: "The enemy lias organized a new large task force, grouping together the Fifth Fleet under the command of Admiral Spruanee, which did not. participate iu the Formosa battle, aud the naval fleet under General MacArthur, as well as other naval forces in the Pacific, excluding Task Force Fifth-eight.”
