SOCIETY’S CONCERN

Removal Of C.P.O. Statuary Concern was expressed at a meeting of the Wellington Beautifying Society at a proposal to cut down and remove, probably immediately the group of statuary above the entrance to lhe Chief Post Office. which it was thought would be dangerous in the event of an earthquake. It wits mentioned at the meeting that there had been no sign of movement throughout the long period the group had stood there, and the advice of experts, whose opinions the society had obtained, was that it could be tied back to the walls at small cost. Society members stated that, apart from the fact that statuary which must have cost thousands of pounds was to be put away in a yard, the city could well do with the retention of ally features which beautified its buildings and parks. The society decided to make every endeavour to prevent the front of the building assuming the ‘‘soap box” effect created at tlie back of the Post Office.
