FALSE RETURNS OF SALES TAX
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, October 2. Junes amounting to £250 were imposed on Thomas Neil Mouat on 10 charges of making erroneous returns of sales tax on timber sold during 10 months. The total involved, £630, included a 10 per cent, penalty. Charges of intent to defraud were dismissed. Defendant 'said he thought the returns were being made by his agent and the omission was dun to carelessness, there being no intention to defraud. Ho operated two farms, » sawmill, an open-cast mine and a cartage business, and had no time for clerical duties. The magistrate, Mr. Chisholm, remarking on the incredible inefficiency of the hook.keeping. absolved defendant of fraudulent intent, imposing the minimum fine of £25 on each charge.
