SKETCH AND STUDIO CLUB
The official opening ot the Wellington Sketch and Studio Club's now rooms at 159 Upper Willis .Street, brought together notable artists and art critics. Among the guests were Mr. G. G. G. Watson (president of the N.Z. Academy of Fine Arts). Dr. Hubert Stout (treasurer of the academy), and Mr. E. D. Gore (secretary of the academy). Mr. and Mrs. Greenbie, United States Legation, were also present. Mr. S. Higgs, president of Hie Sketcli aud Studio Club, introduced Mr. Watson to the uieni'bors and guests. '.Mr Watson, iu opening the rooms, promised the club every help the academy could give in its bigger venture. It was from- such sources as the club that tlio (icadeuiy could look for now talent. New Zealand could congratulate itself ou always having at least some artists throughout her history who ranked favourably with those overseas, lu advising the club against, any conscious striving for a New Zealand School of Art, he said that art was universal, Hie same principles apply in New Zealand as in other countries. A school of art could only develop by the same sound principles of drawing technique, mellowed by inffueuce of environment, light, etc.
