FIRE AT MOUNT COOK HERMITAGE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , TIMARU, September 26. i Fire which broke out shortly after 11 o’clock last night gutted the office at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and did a fair amount of damage to the adjacent passageway and two bedrooms above the office. A howling nor’-wester was blowing and, but for the great fight put up by the staff under Mr. F. Burtensuaw, the engineer, and'a former member of the Timaru Fire Brigade, the damage would have been much greater. Carpets and furniture were somewhat damaged b.v water but it is hoped that the hostel w-ill be open again at the end of the week.
