UNION ACCEPTS TERMS
Tramways Award Dispute The terms of the settlement reached last week at a meeting between representatives of the Wellington Tramway Employees’ Union and the Wellington City Council were subsequently placed before a very large meeting of members of the union, said the secretary of the union, Mr. V. A. Hanson, yesterday. Though it did not fully meet the demands .submitted at an earlier meeting. the discussion between the parties had enabled a reasonable and acceptable understanding, and the terms of the settlement were endorsed by a practically unanimous decision of members of the union.
The conferences had brought a much happier solution than had seemed probable before both sides had come together in amicable discussion, said the mayor, Mr. Appleton, yesterday. They had done more than merely agree on terms for a new award, for a lot of misunderstandings had been cleared up on both sides. There still were certain questions outside the legal award, but if (hey were discussed with the same good mutual feeling he had no doubt that a like acceptable agreement would be reached. Certainly the clearing of the air should lead to a bettor all-round feeling between the tramway committee and the union, ami for that the main credit should go to the assessors on both sides, for they bad discussed their problems in a sound and sensible manner.
The mayor added that ho would make a full statement at an early meeting of the city council.
