Japanese Preparations

(Received September 22, 11.15 p.m.) CHUNGKING, September 22.

The Japanese are rapidly converting Swatow, Amoy and -other points on the 1200-mile coastal stretch fr'om Hainan Island to Shanghai into powerful fortresses in anticipation of' the Allied offensives, reports the Associated Press of America. It is reliably reported that the Japanese are strengthening the garrisons, building new airfields, improving old ones, developing harbour facilities, establishing strong anti-aircraft defences and constructing uew military roads. Several divisions have been sent to reinforce these points. (The Japanese preparations are particularly noticeable southward of Shanghai and the Hong Kong-Canton area.
