Wellington Competitions MR. F. LYNCH’S SUCCESSES
Saturday's sessions of the Wellington competitions were devoted largely to senior, classes, particularly in the vocal section. Mr. F. Lynch, Trentham, who has been the most successful male singer at the festival, won the classes for lieder and negro spirituals and the bass test. He has won also the sacred solo and the Irish folk song. His singing of ‘ Lord God of Abraham” in the sacred solo class was described by Mr. Ernest Empson, who judged that contest, as one of the outstanding events he had heard during the festival, the solo being sung with deep emotion and his voice having a rich, resonant quality with ample range of power. The adjudicator remarked that Mr. Lynch should prove a valuable find as an oratorio singer. Several senior vocal contests were not carried beyond selecting competitors to be, recalled. . . The two recalled competitors m the chief piano solo achieved the highest aggregate in both the test piece and their own selections, the winner, Miss M. Proudfoot, being one point ahead in each division. Mr. Empson remarked that her playing revealed good artistry and, in her Rachmaninoff selection, an effective grasp of rhythm. The competitor placed second. Miss L. Cunninghame. showed clever technique in Debussy’s “Toccata. Preliminaries of the open character recital class were held at the Concert Chamber on Saturday night before Mr. W. Russel I-Wood. who recalled Mr. Ivan Cher, Kelburn, and Miss V. G. Compton, Wellington, to appear again on Wednesday. The final of the open character dance class was held during the evening concert, Miss Peggy Holmes, the dgneing adjudicator. awarding first place to Miss Joy Smith.
