HOSPITAL SCHEME

Commonwealth Subsidy

(Received August 217, 10 p.m.) CANBU3RIRJA, August 27. Daylight-saving will not be introduced in Australia this year. The State Premiers’ conference unanimously, decided against its introduction and the Commonwealth has accepted the decision. The Premiers approved of the Commonwealth Government’s hospital scheme under which all beds in public wards are to be free. The Commonwealth will pay the States 6/- a day for each patient in the publie wards. The scheme will cost the Commonwealth about £4,000,000 a year. The States, it is expected, will save £1,000,000 a year on existing, hospital costs, and this money is to be used for the provision of new hospital services. The Commonwealth will also spend £200,000 a year on the campaign against tuberculosis, while the present Federal subsidy of £25,000 -a year to the States for venereal disease treatment is to be continued.
