ANOTHER PLOTTER?

Goering’s Intentions (Received July 24, 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 23. Some observers in London believe Field-Marshal Goering took part in the plot to kill Hitler. Suggestions that he is implicated in the plau- to establish a rebel Government in Germany arc based on the following facts: —First, it was he who first said that “an. alternative Government” had been established by the rebels. In all later broadcasts of Goering’s speech and in the German newspaper reports of it the reference to an “alternative Government” was deleted. , Secondly, Goering warned the German Air Force to accept no orders but those of himself or Colonel-General Stumpf, whom he appointed Commander-in-Chief of all German air formations inside Germany. A Reuter correspondent says Goering is grabbing the remnants of the German Air Force so that he can make a bid for power himself as soon as the time is ripe. The correspondent adds: “As he watches Russia bearing down. on his immense estates in East Prussia he must be plotting furiously.. The German Air Force and its ground-fighting divisions are virtually his private army, and they provide him with a great trumn card. Probably Goering hopes to use them to blackmail other German leaders into supporting him as a new fuehrer, as he used his planes to blackmail other nations before the war began in September, 1039.” Goebbels Strangely Quiet.

The “Daily Mail’s” Stockholm correspondent says there is considerable mystery surrounding Goebbels’s movements. One rumour suggests that he was among those badly wounded or killed during the attempt against Hitler. The correspondent says, “In a crisis of this magnitude Goebbels would normally have played a leading role, delivering speeches, writing articles, and being photographed among the cheering throngs, hut this time he has been-completely in the background. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says. “There is more ground now’ for the belief that the attempt against Hitler was made at Munich and not at Berchtesgaden or in Berlin. It would be easy for the Nazis to hush up the affair altogether if it had occurred at Berchtesgaden, but if it occurred in a large town it would be more difficult to conceal. Mussolini’s presence also suggests that Munich was the scene.” German newspapers reaching Stockholm today publish pictures of the room where the attempt against Hitler’s life is said to have occurred. It is in chaos, with the ceiling down and furniture overturned. There is debris everywhere. Hitler and Mussolini are shown inspecting the damage. German newspapers comment. “It is a pure miracle that anybody involved in the incident is still alive.”
