BLACK MARKET IN ONIONS
Sales Through Illegal Channels Dominion Special Service.
CHRISTCHURCn, July 24.
Yet another black market is operating iu Christchurch. According to produce merchants, onion growers are selling their produce through illegal channels. For some time, it wns stated, merchants had been unable to buy onions from growers, yet it was known that large quantities of onions were being sold by growers. The reason for the development of the black market, it was explained, arose from the comparatively poor crop this season on account, of the bad weather experienced at sowing time, the development of disease that had affected crops during the past three seasons, and the poor keeping quality of the onions. Because of the short crop. it was stated, growers found that they could secure a higher price on the black market than that set by the Price Tribunal. The wholesale pi-ice for July was £l5 a ton. and for August it was fixed at £IS. “It is time the Government took strong action," said one merchant.
