The combined annual race meeting ui the Manawatu and Rangitikei Hunt Clubs was held at Marton on Saturday in boisterous weather. The track has seldom been in heavier condition and the times were P l ably tho slbwest ever recorded on this course. , The Hunt Cup Steeplechase was won ny Baron Bold, who is raced by the V\ averley amateur. Mr. Alan Lupton. Baron Bold was making his second appearance tor the dav. having run .second earner to Pekoe in the Maiden Steeplechase. The only open event on the fiat was won easily by Whackie, who had been reported ‘by connexions to be a doubt tn 1 starter. This did not prevent a short odds-on price which accompanied his very easy win. , . . The fields were not as large as usual, and most of the winners were well backed. Red Chief was prominent for seven furlongs, and tnen d'colonel Bogey; third favourite, won the Hack Hurdles from the outsider, Golden Tide. Monmouth, Golden Tide and Ihe Champ lod early from Ghire. Sandy Bay was fourth, with Thoioway, Magic Art and Old Rod next. Old Red was well placed at the home turn hut stopped quickly. Bay Robe races in Hie same colours as Kanui te lai and is the first of the progeny of Robemond to win In New Zealand. Making hin second appearance for the day, Baron Bold won the Hunt Cup Steeplechase easily from the favourite, Lust Match Baron Bold led throughout. Last Match was taken up to him in the. midle stages of the final round, but could not break even over the next tliree fences, and in the concluding half-mile Baron Bold comfortably had the upper band and won by I's lengths from Last Match, who was a furlong clear of Lactose. Ngamotu, who lost his rider three fences from home, was remounted and finished fourth. Regicide fell, Political Boy ran off, and First Role lost Ills rider.

Benevc, a maiden, won the Champion Hank Gup comfortably from the third favourite, Hakim. Hulabaloo'and Hakim were the leaders for six furlongs, from AH Bunsby, Sovereign Lad, Rosinante ami Beneve. The bist-nained moved up on the turn and led for home from Hulabaloo, All Buusbv and Hakim. Benevc drew clear nr. the distance and finished full of running to hold off a late run from Hakim anil beat him by two lengths. Ail Bunsby was four lengths back third, and Hulabaloo was a poor fourth, fading out badly before reaching the home tui’n. Whackie outclassed the field in the President’s Handicap. Plato Lad and Wings of Song led for three furlongs, where Whackie and Alelicmy improved tiicir positions. Whackie took over before reaching tlie straight and led for home front Plato Lad, Alchemy, Duality and Duncannon. He soon drew clear and won very easily. Alchemy was too good for the others, beating’ Duality by two lengths. Duality ran on well. blit, liad too much ground to make up. Pariato was a moderate fourth, ami Plato Lad was next. Saddled tip for his second start, Sandy Bay won the Farewell Handicap by a comfortable margin. Guy Lena, Lady .Mldian and Pennyroyal bngiin best, but at Hie end of two furlongs Sandy Bay ran into the lead and he was never deposed. He led for home from Gay Lena. Tu Wainika and Pennyroyal, but as the Inst-iiamed trio ail ran wide. Sandy Bay secured an additional advantage, and be’ only bail to keep going to win by two lengths from Pennyroyal, who might have won hail she not been carried off at. the homo turn. Te Wanaka was fourth, and Sivatn and Old Red next. Old Red stopped very quickly soon after turning into the straight.
