ESCAPE OF PRISONERS
Explanation By Germans (Received July 23, 0.30 p.ni.) LONDON. July 22. “Large numbers of British prisoners of war last March escaped from various eamps in Germany. Steps taken to recapture them were successful.” says the German news agency. “It was found during the round-up that certain action prepared to contact elements abroad had been foiled. The German security forces who rounded up the prisoners had in some cases to imp arms,.because of attempts at resistance or escape and a number of prisoners lost their lives. “The German Government through .Switzerland informed Britain of these happenings and promised a final and conclusive report later. In the meantime, however, Mr. Eden did not hesitate to make in the House of Commons unheard of allegations that the prisoners were murdered. Germany has sent, Britain a Note strongly repudiating this charge. The Foreign Secretary of a country which began the bombing war and which has mnrdered tcns of thousands of women and children in terror attacks has not the right even to speak on this matter. The German Government view of Mr. Eden’s unheard of demeanour is therefore to refuse to make any further communication regarding the matter."
