Jockeys Obtain First Rise For 20 Years tFor the first time in 20 years, jockeys licensed by the New Zealand Racing Conference have boon granted an increase in riding fees. This was approved by the racinir club delegates nt the annual meeting of tlic Racing Conference. The new scale of fees, which becomes operative on August 1, is as follows: — For Flat Races. To a joeko.v of a horse placed first, second or third: £4 per cent, on the value o£ the money payable t.<s the owner, but in no case shall the rider of a winner (including the winner of a division race), receive loss than £1 more than tlic fee of a losing jockey in the same race, nor shall the rider of a horse placed second or third, or flcad-heating for’ either such place, re-, ccive less than a losing jockey’s fee In the same race. To a jockey other than as above: In no case less than £l/’lo/-. If the value of the money payable to the winner is £5O, and does not exceed £lOO. £2/1.0/-: if it exceeds £lOO. and not £l5O, £3: if it exceeds £l5O. £4. For Hurdle Races and Steeplechases. To a jockey of a horse placed first, second or third': £0 per centum on the value of the money paya-ble to the owner, but in no case shall the rider of a winner receive less than £1 more than the fee of a losing jockey in (he same race, nor shall the rider of a horse placed second or third, or dead-heating for either such place, receive less than a losing jockey’s fee in the same race To a jockey other than as above: In no case less than £3. In reply to a delegate who asked whether such a course was permissible under the stabilization regulations, the president stated that an opinion had been obtained and the answer was that the riding fee was a contract and did not come within the scope of pegged wages under stabilization and there was no oflleiu.l objection to the increase.
