BOXING AT PETONE

Marked throughout by scientific and'hard punching, a 10-round professional featherweight boxing contest at the Labour Hall, i’elone, last night, between Bonny Hawes (Heretaunga), 8.10, and Harold Foote (■Wellington), Ost., resulted in a draw. It was Hawes’s first professional tight, and he made a splendid showing. The decision was well received by a crowded house. The bout began at a fast pace, and for the first three rounds .there was little between the pair. Hawes made Foote miss quite badly at times, but right through the tight was even and ngressive. The last round in particular was fought at a furious pace. Both men were in excellent condition. ' In the first, and second rounds both connected cleanly with lefts. Hawes, through clever ducking, made Foote miss repeatedly with his right. In the third round Hawes threw some clever left hooks at Foote and connected several times. This was Hawes’s round. The ngressive spirit was still maintained through tlie fourth 'round. Foote connected with a nice right cross which effectively stopped Hawes, but Hawes .was in again, with lefts and rights to Foote's head. Foote was slightly ahead in tliis ground. Tlie fifth was another spirited round, with Hawes still the more aggressive.—Hawes's round. By a small margin Hawes also won the sixth round, but the seventh, eighth and ninth, were Footc'.s. After the sixth round Foote appeared Io gain tlie. upper hand with lefts and rights to the chin and body. Tlie tenth round was one of the best seen in Petone for some time.' When the bell rang both men came out throwing punches and maintaining a fast pace. Hawes got slightly the bolter of Ibis round. The referee, was ■ Mr. Alt Cloverly, and the judges were Messrs. H. C.
