TARGETS IN GERMANY HEAVILY RAIDED
Fierce Aerial Battles LONDON, June 20. Berlin radio announced that this morning Americi n bomber formations attacked several targets in the Hanover, Stettin, and central Elbe areas, and that heavy air battles occurred. Mustangs and Thunderbolts* which escorted American heavy bombers raiding oil targets deep in Germany reported shooting down 33 enemy planes and the destruction of 12 others on the ground, it is reported in London. Liberators, attacking oil refineries-at Politz, encountered frop 60 to 75 enemy fighters of various types, which attacked repeatedly. The Liberators also met with intense anti-aircraft fire, but photographs showed good bombing results. The majority of the Fortress and Liberators attacking other oil targets did not encounter enemy fighters, and reported good results under excellent weather conditions.
The escorting fighters reported shooting down 41 enemy fighters and also the destruction of 13 on the ground. The bombers reported shooting down 12 more fighters. Forty-seven of our bombers and seven fighters have not returned.
Twenty-two American bombers landed in Sweden, some in crashes, after the raids on Germany this morning, says a message from Stockholm. Big Raid On Berlin.
LONDON, June 21. The German radio says that American heavy bombers today made a heavy attack on Berlin.
