CONVERGING FORCES
Clearing Road To Imphal (British Official Wireless and Press Assn.) (Received June 21, 9 p.m.) RUGBY, June 20. Only a 29-mile gap now separates our two forces advancing from Imphal and Kohima, says a Kandy message. This is considered one of the best developments of the war on this sector. Once the road to Imphal is cleared, our troops in Imphal can be supplied by rail and road instead of by air as hitherto. Ten thousand Japanese were killed on the Imphal front in the last three months. This figure does not include casualties caused by bombing and artillery fire. . . A Chungking message quotes a Chinese communique which reports that after a six weeks’ siege Ghurkas and Lachins captured heavily defended Tiangzup, 40 miles north of Myitkyina. The Chinese in the Mogaung Valley advanced five miles from Kamaing. The Chinese and Chindits continue to exert pressure on the enemy round Mogaung. The situation round Myitkyina is unchanged.
