COAL FOR GAS
Wellington And Hutt In Serious Position Coal stocks arc low and Ute present position serious. This was stated by the Wellington Gas Company last night. The shortage was said to be due to Steamers being bar-bound for several days —one at Greymouth and one at westport. Both had left yesterday and tomorrow the company should have supplies to relieve the position. Jleantime consumers were asked to exercise care. Consumers must expect serious inconvenience in the next few days, said the chairman of the Petone and' Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, Mr. H. F- Muir, Because of weather conditions and the Greymouth bar being unworkable for days on end, the board's coal stocks were exhausted. It was at present beingwpplied with coal unsiiited for gasmaking at its works and, even if suitable, inadequate. There was no prospect in sight for an early supply °f suitable coal.
