34 Letters In One Day For Girl In Hospital

Encouraging improvement, has been reported in the condition of Doreen Taylor, the young Auckland girl, a patient in the Green Lane Hospital, suffering from tuberculosis of the spine and hip., since her “adoption” by the Navy. This is attributed in large measure by the doctors and nurses to the interest and stimulation atforded her by her position as the Navy.s “mascot,” according to Petty Officer H. L. Gillum, who was largely responsible tor the scheme. The move, it will be remembered. followed the adoption of Gloria Lyons, the young patient in the Christchurch Hospital, by a Royal New Zealand Air Force unit in the Pacific. As each ship comes to Auckland tne case of Doreen and her claim on the Navy’s interest is put before the men largely through the agency of the proprietor of an hotel well known to the men of the sea. In consequence she is rarely without visitors'-when hours permit, and flowers go to her regularly. In other ways. too. the generosity of her visitors takes care of small incidentals for her pleasure and comfort, the expense of which would otherwise be upon her parents. .. Apart from this aspect, overseas mail days are times of special pleasure. Ibirtyfour letters were her share one day recently.
