SUPPLY PROBLEM

American Machine Tool At Treble British Price More than a year ago a Wellington local body placed an order for machine tools to the value of £B2OO. After much correspondence and several interviews with Ministry of Supply officers the order for one item was temporarily withdrawn as, if it was pressed, the local body would have had to accept an inferior American machine nearly treble tlie price of the British machine accepted. Thirteen months after placing the order the firm to which it had been given was informed that the three items on order had been transferred to the United States for procurement and giving quotations from the Director, New Zealand Supply Mission, Washington. These quotation’s simply gave the dollar price, ex factory, without any description ot design. construction, or performance, and. as far as could be estimated, the costs would be greatly in excess of those quoted for the required British machines. Before proceeding further the local body is asking for fuller information.
