VOLUNTEERS EXTEND ACTIVITIES

Allied Forces Club Men and women in uniform and members of the Merchant Navy who visited the Allied Services Club in Manners Street, nt the weekend found voluntary helpers engaged in a wholehearted effort to add to their recreation during their stay in Wellington. Yesterday marked the first of a series of organized entertainment programmes planned by a special committee. Afternoon activities got under way with a tea dance led by the Trenthain Orchestra from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The band followed ' this with a concent of popular music, and a community sing supervised by Mr. Morris and members qf the Tin Hat. Club earned the approbation of the many couples who thronged the dance floor. Other entertainments which will he presented at frequent intervals will include a concert for the diversion of mon who do not dance, table tennis tournaments, and a monster club birthday party in July. Servicewomen as well as men will bo invited. Captain S. Wilson, officer in charge of the club, estimated that the revised entertainment schedule had given impetus to the usual Sunday attendance, more than 1000 guests being present as contrasted with an average of 600. He accorded special thanks to the band and Mr. J. Barker, a club helper, also thanked the players on behalf of the girls’ committee. Extras were played by Mrs. 'Woodcock. The committee is as follows t— Mrs. Kent Howard, chairman, Miss A. Bethell, deputy-chairman. Aliss Joan Young, organizing secretary, Mrs. T. Tarrant, committee secretary, and Mesdnnics K. Bootliman, McMillan, Grigg, Misses G. Johnson. S. Flett. Smith and B. Berrett. Most of the committee arc captains of the groups of voluntary helpers mid have worked, at the club since its inauguration.
