VERY LIGHT LOSSES
Merchant Shipping In Mediterranean (Received May 28, 7.5 p.m.) ‘ LONDON, May 27. In one month this year, 11,500,000 tons of Allied shipping was convoyed across lhe Mediterranean. This was revealed by Admiral Sir John Cunningham, Naval C'ommander-in-Chief, Mediterranean, in his first Press conference since the opening of the Italian campaign. He auded that the percentage of Allied losses in the Mediterranean in three months was .28 per cent. Two thousand merchantmen a month made voyages between Mediterranean ports. The daily average was 230. Admiral Cunningham emphasized the vast amounts of raw materials which now passed through the Mediterranean on their way to Britain. “I have lost the habit of differentiating between the Royal Navy and the United States Navy,” he said. “It does not even enter my mind. Both navies are one and indivisible. I hope they will always remain so.” Vice-Admiral P. N. L. Bellinger, Commander of the Atlantic Fleet Air Force, said that German submarines were beng sunk faster than they can be built.
