“FOREVER AND A DAY”

(Second week). —“Forever and a (Plaza), it appears, took <8 players, writers and seven directors three years to make. It was produced in Hollywood hi aid of wartime charities and it traces the history of a London house from Nelson s dav to the blitz of 1940. The subject m seen mainly through the nostalgic eyes ot the British colony in Hollywood. beading characters in order of their appearance include Herbert Marshall. Ray Milland. Anna Neagle, Claude Rains, Jessie Matthews. Charles Laughton. Sir Cedric Hardwieke. Ida Lupino, Brian Aherne, Merle Oberon and Robert Cummings. As fur the directors and writers there is nothing to indicate which mind worked on which section of the picture. The most imposing thing about “Forever and a Day. in fact, is its harmonious consistency—the fact that so many diverse talents could work together to achieve something so smooth. Several performances stand out, ami there is a little gem of acting with Hardwieke as a Victorian plumber and Buster Keaton (it\s news to many that he is British-born) as his hopeless assistant.

“Get Cracking” (State) —The inimitable George Formbv frolics his way through another series* of nonsensical situations. Three new songs are featured. An excellent first half includes a “Three Stooges comedy. . “Mv Favourite Spy” (Tudor)-— An esting coinedv with music supplied oy Kav Kayser and his band. Kay Francis ami Janies Ellison star in the associate feature, “Play Girl.” “Journey for Margaret” (Tivoli), xne adventures of an orphan of the London blitz. Robert Young and Margaret O Brien star. “Air Raid Warden,” with Laurel and Hardy, also screens. “Bataan” ’(State, Petone).—Robert laylor stars as the leader of an American patrol fighting a desperate rearguard action. He is supported by a capable cast.
