Iceland To Be Republic WASHINGTON, May 23. As the result of a referendum which had the sunport of the Government and all the political parties. Iceland has decided to sever its ties with Denmark and will proclaim itself a free and independent republic on June 17. Iceland celebrated the 1000th anniversary of its Parliament in 1930. It has been a sovereign State since 131 b. but is united with Denmark through a common King. . _ American soldiers have occupied Iceland since July. 1041. The Icelandic Minister to the United States, Mr. Thors, said that Americans had the power to oppress the small nation, but instead had assisted in its search for complete freedom. “It is interesting that we are able to acquire complete independence while enjoying the friendly presence of American soldiers,” he said. <4 lt could not have happened had the soldiers been German.
