HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMAN

Statutory Meeting Opened And Adjourned The annual statutory meeting of ’ iie Wellington Harbour Board for the election of chairman was opened yesterday and adjourned to June 20. “Before calling for nominations I desire to state that it appears the intention of the statute that the chairman should he elected by the newly constituted board,” said the chairman. Mr. M . 11. Price. “Owing to the postponement of the elections from May 20 to May 27 it is most unlikely that, the constitution of the new board will be known in time to allow of a meeting of the new board within the time prescribed in the Act (within 30 clays after the second Wednesday in May, that is, on or before June 9). ' , “I consider that the proper course to take is to convene a meeting within :he time prescribed b.v statute and adjourn to a date after receipt of the official declarations. The meeting is accordingly convened for today, ami I now move that the meeting stand adjourned till Juno 20, the date set down for the wharves and accounts committee meeting.” The motion was carried. “A very convenient way of defeating the law,” remarked Mr. J. O. Johnson. Tlie chairman: We are keeping within the law.

Mr. Johnson : I’m only having a joke. Mr. Chairman.
