LIMITED AMOUNT ONLY
Petrol For Local Body Elections
EACH CASE TO BE DEALT WITH ON MERITS
A very limited amount of petrol will be made available for local body elections Making this announcement last evening, the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr. Sullivan, said that local oil fuel con trailers had been instructed to deal with individual applications on their merits. In cases where it was impossible or too difficult for a candidate to cover his district by public transport facilities just sufficient petrol would he provided to enable him to do the necessary travelling. On election day each candidate may also apply to the local .controller for a limited amount of petrol for the transport of aged and infirm people to the polling booth. These applications must be supported by satisfactory evidence of necessity. Candidates who are dissatisfied with the decisions of the local controllers may appeal to the Oil Fuel Controller, Transport Department. Wellington. “The petrol position in this country, said the Minister, “is anything but satisfactory. and I ask all candidates to limit their demands to the barest possible minimum. I would point out that petrol allowed for business purposes must not be used for election purposes. I may say that as Minister of Supply and Munitions, I am making petrol available only because the Government feels that it is essential in a democratic, country that every reasonable opportunity to exercise their electoral rights should, be afforded candidates and voters alike.”
