BOMBING OF TIRPITZ
Wellington Flyer’s Part LONDON, April 7. Reuter’s correspondent with the Home Fleet oil Norway snys that at least 10 New Zealand Elect Air Arm pilots and observers participated in the Barracuda attacks which knocked out the Tirpitz. Lieutenant 11. R. Emerson, St. Heller s Bay, Auckland, the senior pilot of one squadron, said: "Ours was the second machine to bomb the Tirpitz, which was nestling close under a high clilt. >' e just rolled over uiid dived on her. Anti* aircraft lire started to come up. but our heavy armour-piercing bomb got a direct hit amidships.” Sub-Lieutenant J. Herrold, Rotorua, is a pilot who is credited with a direct, hit. "Tlie whole thing seemed such a pleasant excursion that it was too good to be true,” he said. "There was no fighter opp.osition.” , Sub-1 Jenlenaut J. A. Gledlitll, Island Bay. Wellington, said: "There was _ a terrilic glow amidships on the 1 nqiitz when I dived on her. and tremendous niusr.ronins of brown smoke were going up from bomb bursts from the planes ahead. The link was pretty heavy. Our medium bombers got direct hits on the bridge.”
