FURTHER AIR RAIDS
Carolines And Marshalls (Received April 7, 10.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 6. American bombers again struck _ at Japanese-held islands in the Carolines and Marshalls on Monday and Tuesday. Seven army Liberators bombed Moen and Dublon Islands in Truk atoll, on Monday night, hitting oil storage tanks at Dublon and starting several fires. Smaller fires were started on Moen. One of six intercepting fighters was shot down and another probably destroyed. Two Liberators are missing.
A navy Liberator probably sank a tanker near Moen. Army Mitchells escorted by marine Corsairs, raided Ponape Island', in the eastern Carolines, hitting an airfield and adjacent buildings. Army Mitchells, navy Venturas, and marine Corsairs and Dauntlesses bombed and strafed four enemy-held atolls in the Marshalls on Tuesday. One Corsair was shot down near Wotje atoll, but a destroyer rescued the pilot. Shore batteries scored two hits on the destroyer, causing minor damage.
